What Is Yuzu?

One of the flaves we love playing with at our Remedy Fermentary is yuzu. You'll find it in our smash hit Sodaly flave, Yuzu Lemon, and in Yuzu & Mandarin Small Batch Kombucha, one of our three iconic Small Batch flaves.

Both bevs are taking Australia and New Zealand by storm. So we're here to give you the rundown on what the deal is with yuzu. What even is it? Where does it come from? Is it worth the hype? Let's suss it out together!

What is yuzu?

Yuzu is a type of lemon that's super fragrant, a teeny bit sour, and deliciously citrusy. It originated in China and is now most closely associated with Japanese cuisine. If you've been to Japan lately, you'll have no doubt stumbled across how the zest and juice amp up the flavour in all kinds of food and drink! 

What does yuzu taste like?

Now that we know yuzu is a lemon, you might be thinking it tastes like a regular old lemon. Just a smidge different.

It's still citrusy, but it also has a distinctive taste that sets it apart from all the other citrus flavour profiles going around. It's like your regular old lemon got dressed up for a night in the city. Still the same humble lemon we all know and love, but with a little bit something extra. It's not flashy, it's not glitzy - but it has some extra pizazz that takes it into a class of its own.

What benefits does it have?

Alongside being utterly delish, yuzu is said to have many wonderful benefits (double win!)

According to Healthline, it:

• Contains antioxidants  
• Is highly nutritious
• Has a calming scent, which can reduce tension and anxiety

Why do we love it?

We're huge nerds when it comes to flavours, so it's no surprise we're a little bit in love with yuzu. Not only do we love how it elevates the classic citrus flavour profile, we love that it's totally different and wholly smashable at any time of the day. It's a banger of a flave on its own, and it also plays well with others (hello, Small Batch Yuzu & Mandarin).
